The aim of the project was to conduct study to develop energy usage profile and implement controls in a marine terminal control building. The objective is to use Internet of Thing to help facility manager to identify and select the most appropriate energy consumption parameters to use as inputs for the energy usage management.

The project is divided into 2 phases. The first phase is to conduct energy usage profile. The second phase is the implementation of IoT control devices for energy efficient plan implementation. The energy profile phase gives the analysis information for us to identify what parameters involves and relates to the energy factors. These factors is used as the controlling parameter when controlling the energy usage The information from the first phase gives us the holistic views of how people is using every and the pattern of tenants' movement during the day.. The energy profiling was conducted for 2 months. We examined the following.

  1.   We developed the base line electrical usage for the devices that has to always be on. We measured the load that used during the night time and record the energy usage.​
  2. We mesured the energy usage during the day time. This gave us the profile for occasionnaly connected device on the network.
    We measured tenant behaviors. This is to track the movement and patternize the profile of tenants when moving around in the building during the day at work for the past 2 months. 

  3. We ask the tenants to cooperate by scanning the RFID device at the scanner we attached at the office doors every time they move in and out We also hooked up the motion sensor inside every room to compare the tenant mobility result..
  4. ​We measured the room temperature and lighting level inside the room and outside of the building.
  5. We compare the energy consumption collected from each device to sum up and compare with the total building energy consumption.
  6. Since the building do not have alternate energy source, then the combination of this kind of power was out of our the scope of assessment.

From the collected data over the 2 month period, we plot the data against one another to identify the following:

  1. Wattage consumption vs. the outside temp.
  2.  Wattage consumption vs. the tenant movement profile
  3. ​Wattage consumption vs. the air-cond consumption

This was the end of phase 1. We had developed the energy usage profile of the building. We then step into phase 2.


For phase 2, we developed smart devices including smart receptacles, smart lighting swithch, and smart remote to control the operations of air-cond. These device were installed to allow the system and the tenants to remotely control every electric appliances inside the building. The air-cond is proven to be the major source of power consumption. The remote device allows the control of air-cond operating temperature in accordance with the tenant movement profiles.


The projects yielded 10-20% energy saving, allowing the marine terminal control building save more than 480,000 Baht a year on electric bill.
